Farmer Fred's Garden
Farmer Fred, the camp scarecrow, who leans against the windmill, guards the yummy vegetable garden. I wish he would guard against potato bugs! A very few brave campers will help pick the bugs off the plants. The bugs are bright orange and can be easily seen eating away at our potato vines.
Camp cookout day on Thursday has become a gourmet delight with all the fresh vegetables to eat. The campers help dig the potatoes and always find treasures, such as potatoes that look like Mickey Mouse or a duck, sometimes a famous person, and of course Mr. and Mrs. Potatohead. One day we found thirty-five potatoes under one plant! On Thursday, Teepee camp cooks homefries with all the fresh potatoes. They are super good!
Next, the campers search for the green beans. They are very good on a fresh veggie tray with ranch dip. The cucumbers are just right, along with delicious green peppers. The tomatoes make a great salsa for chips. If we could only grow marshmallows we could supply the entire cookout meal.
All the campers enjoy watching the baby corn tassle and grow. We can hardly wait for it to be ripe for cookout. Sweet potatoes are winding around the garden and watermelon are growing on the fence. Pole beans are crawling up the trellises with lots of purple blooms. Marigolds and zinnias are mixed in with the vegetaables, making the garden a rainbow of colors.
