Sept. 2009: Fruits of the Season
The paw paw trees have produced their first fruit (see the photo of a paw paw leaf at the right). We had about twenty short green banana-like objects hidden among the green leaves. Every few days we would lose a few paw paws, which was a big mystery! Finally we gathered two ripe paw paws and decided to be brave and taste them. Wow! Yum! They are really good. They taste like apple custard.
The pear trees are providing large amounts of fruit, too. Milo, Buddy, the rabbits and Tinker all love pears. The new lettuces are growing in Farmer Fred's garden. The deer have learned to jump parts of the garden fence, so we have to share the lettuces.
Miss Duck and her duck friends are loving all the rain. The more it pours down, the better it is for ducks! All the other residents of the farm are staying indoors and just hunkering down until the sun comes out.
