March 2009: Spring Greetings
Visitors and repairmen are greeted and welcomed to Camp Whippoorwill in a very strange way! Lily (the shy dog) approaches, barking and wagging her tail - and just behind her is Miss Duck, quacking as loudly as Lily is barking. Usually visitors are very confused and retreat before the loud duck and the tail-wagging dog. We quickly reassure everyone that this unusual greeting is customary at Whippoorwill!
These rainy spring days are a problem for the duck. She loves the wet weather, but all her friends (the dog, the pig, and the goat) stay in their warm, dry houses. She searches the area for a friend and, if she sees one of the camp staff, she runs toward us as fast as she can, quacking loudly to us. We always try and quack back and talk to her - and it seems to help.
All the animals will be glad when their camp friends return. They love all the attention!
