Aug. 2009: Drama at the Farm
Ducks flying, chickens laying eggs, and horses happily grazing make for a very quiet scene at Whipporwill Farm after a busy summer.
Miss Duck continues to lead the younger ducks, teaching them to be safe from predators. The ducks are free to wander and they can fly anywhere they want. They still like it best swimming on our pond, and keeping company with Lily the dog and the goat and pig. Each morning the ducks are waiting at the camp office, quacking loudly for their delicious cracked corn. Do you think that is one reason they prefer to stay at camp, and not fly away?
Sad news from the chicken house, with the loss of the five teenager chickens. A possum crawled up the chicken wire and killed the young chickens. They did not know how to hide from the critter. All the big chickens flew up to the top of the shelves and the possum could not find them. We are now putting wire across the top of the area where the possum crawled in. We found the possum and exiled him to a wilderness area far away. We hope justice was served!
Drama at the farm is a daily occurrence, filled with comedy and tragedy.
